About this Project

The aim of this site is to reveal the environment in which Franz Kafka lived. It introduces the places in his life, the people who shaped his environment, the books on his bedside table and the films that lured him into the Ponrepo cinema. We hold out a hand to Max Brod, Robert Klopstock, Felice Bauer, Milena Jesenská, Ernst Weiß and Berta Fanta. His great novels and short prose poems, such as those in the collection A Country Doctor serve to bind it all together. Besides this literal approach, we are particularly keen to show you Kafka’s world through an array of images, a pictorial treasure trove that goes way beyond the famous portraits to add a splash of colour to the black-and-white icons.
