This anthology of German tales from Moravia is devoted to a small Central European country that is still little known to this day. The literature of these German-Moravian poets and authors remains an important part of European cultural heritage, whether in the works of the Austrian author Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, who came from Zdislawitz (Zdislavice); or Hermann Ungar from Boskovice, who was highly regarded by Thomas Mann; or the Jewish author Jakob Julius David from Mährisch-Weißkirchen (Hranice na Moravě). Then there is Ferdinand von Saar, who told sympathetic stories of the old monarchy, and of course the “democratic trailblazer” Karl Postl, who came from near Znaim (Znojmo) and wrote under the name Charles Sealsfield, becoming one of the founders of American literature.
