Felix Butschek is a well-known Austrian economic historian and economic researcher. In his career he stood alongside personalities such as Rupert Gmoser, Bruno Kreisky and Hannes Androsch. He was by no means a dogmatic party soldier – quite the opposite: as a “right-wing Social Democrat” he repeatedly took a stand against the New Left or irrational tendencies in politics. Butschek’s memories not only reflect the successful path from an impoverished country to one of the richest industrial nations in the world, they also offer an insight into the inner workings of Austria.
